Kids in CYC Jerseys FREE at CYC Night at SLU Men's Soccer Game

CYC Night at the SLU Volleyball Game was such a success, Saint Louis University has graciously offered another KIDS IN JERSEYS get in FREE for CYC Night, Saturday October 3rd, at 7pm, when the SLU Men's soccer team takes on Clemson.  The volleyball match drew the largest crowd to see a SLU volleyball match, 6,106.  The SLU men's soccer team would like the same large crowd cheering them on.  The Billikens started the season ranked #21 in the nation.  Nine of the current Billiken soccer players played CYC sports growing up in St Louis, including Nick Maglasang (pictured above).  So come cheer on your fellow CYC athletes who are now playing at the collegiate level.

Not only do Kids in Jerseys get in FREE, but family and friends that accompany them can get tickets for only $3 for this game, if they call the Billiken Ticket Office at 314 977-4SLU at least one day in advance of the game and reserve your tickets.  This means you can bring the whole family to the game for as little as $6!!!  Or bring your whole team!!!  Enjoy college soccer action and see if we can't help break the attendance record for a home Billiken soccer game.  See you at the game!

CORRECTION - Originally we understood the Kids get in FREE offer to be for all SLU Volleyball, Soccer and Women's Basketball games.  However, the offer for all other games (non-CYC nights) is if you call at least one day ahead of the game, all CYC players, family and friends can get tickets at a group rate of $3 per ticket.  Even if your group is only 2.  Still a great offer for our CYC families.

Be on the lookout for Random Acts of Sportsmanship

As a Catholic Youth Council we take pride in our long tradition of providing children through out the St. Louis area with the opportunities to compete with their parish and friends in a variety of sports.  For over 50 years the CYC has sponsored archdiocesan playoffs, recognizing league, district and area wide champions.

In addition to recognizing winners of games, we feel it is imperative for the CYC to search for and recognize Acts of Sportsmanship at our athletic events.  As a Catholic organization we must train our children to display Christian values in all parts of their lives, especially during athletic competition.  In an effort to recognize and reward sportsmanship among CYC participants, we are instituting a program called Random Acts of Sportsmanship (RAS)

We are asking everyone (players, coaches, officials and fans) to help get this program started.  We want you to be on the lookout for Acts of Sportsmanship.  We want to make it simple for anyone to report a Random Act of Sportsmanship.  So if you see a RAS, you simply e-mail or call 314 792-7604 and give the following information:

1. Date, time and location of the game.

2. Player(s), Coach(es), Official(s), Team(s) or fans(s) involved in the RAS.

3. A brief description of what you saw and what impressed you about the RAS.

We will take it from there!  We will follow-up by talking with the participants and thanking them for exemplifying what is good about CYC sports.  We will recognize their RAS on the CYC website and forward the information to their district and parish.  We hope that the Random Acts of Sportsmanship become a regular agenda item at the District meetings and Parish Athletic Meetings.  We will also encourage the parish to mention it in the parish bulletin.

Random Acts of Sportsmanship surely should be rewarded.  In keeping with the theme, we plan to give Random Rewards for outstanding RAS.  Rewards will vary, but include tickets to athletic events, restaurant coupons, photos, athletic apparel and more.

So start now!  Keep your eyes and minds open to recognizing Acts of Sportsmanship!  Then simply e-mail or call us with the RAS and we will make sure they are recognized and rewarded.  We would love for CYC Sports to be synonymous with Random Acts of Sportmanship.

Record Setting Crowd on CYC Night at SLU Volleyball

A record crowd of 6,106 came to Chaifetz Arena on Saturday night, August 29th to cheer on the Saint Louis University Billikens as they battled the two time defending national champions, Penn State.  The partisan crowd was treated to an extended, see-saw battle in the first set.  The crowd roaring with every SLU point and groaning when Penn State scored.  Eventually the Nittany Lions prevailed 29-27.  It was college volleyball at it's best!  Set two was another good game in which the Billikens couldn't quite catch Penn State, losing 25-18.  In set three Penn State showed why they haven't lost a match in two years, winning 25-14.

However, the other big story of the night was the huge crowd that shattered last year's record crowd of just over 2,000.  When you looked into the stands, it was a rainbow of CYC uniforms, that complimented the SLU student body dressed in all blue at the West end of the court.  Between sets CYC players recognized the six SLU volleyball players and two staff members who grew up playing CYC sports by giving them T-shirts that had "I PLAYED CYC SPORTS" on the front and "SAINT LOUIS U" on the back.  Then our young CYC players went into the SLU student body and found former CYC players to give them the "I PLAYED CYC SPORTS" shirts off their backs.

Thank you to all who attended and were treated to some great volleyball action and a fun night.  If you would like to view more photos of this event just click here, CYC Night at SLU Volleyball

CYC Men's Slowpitch Playoffs

After nearly a month straight of rainouts in June, the Men's Slowpitch leagues finished their regular season and six teams advanced to the playoffs.  The playoffs were held Friday August 14th and Saturday 15th at Willmore Park.  The double elimination playoffs saw Amsterdam Tavern (team in red above), Guarantee Interiors and Seamus McDaniels (team in green above) advance to the final day.  Seamus McDaniels came in undefeated, but lost to Guarantee Interiors in the first Championship round game.  Then, with both teams sporting 3-1 records through the playoffs, the two teams played for the final time this season.  Defending champions, Seamus McDaniels, prevailed 3-2 in a real pitchers duel, as great defensive plays and numerous double plays prevailed.  Click here, 2009 Men's Slowpitch Softball, to view more photos.
