Sportsmanship turns a game into a Memory of a Lifetime

St. Clement's Basketball coach Bart Sullivan shared this story as a way of showing his heartfelt appreciation for Ascension coach Matt Schwarz and his 8th grade boys basketball team.  Below is the story of how this Random Act of Sportsmanship unfolded in a league basketball game this season.

St Clement's has a player on their team who has myotonic muscular dystophy and a number of other neurological challenges, his name is Jack.  Jack has been on the team since 3rd grade, but because of his limitations does not play a lot and has only scored one basket in his grade school career, that back in 3rd grade.  Although the St. Clement's players try to get him shots, he has a hard time catching and shooting the ball, even against the lightest defense.

It was late in the game, the outcome had already been decided, at a time out coach Sullivan went to the Ascension coach to see if his team would be willing to allow Jack to get a shot, and possibly the last basket of his basketball career.  Coach Schwarz immediately said he would take care of it.  When play resumed, the St. Clement's players got Jack the ball close to the basket.  The Ascension players gave Jack plenty of room to shoot.  Nevertheless, he missed the shot.  A teammate rebounded the ball and gave it to Jack, he shot again and missed.  This time an Ascension player got the rebound and passed it to back to Jack.  He shot again.  This time he didn't miss!

The fans in the stands for both teams grasped what was going on immediately and the entire crowd exploded in applause and cheers for Jack as the clock ran out.  In the line after the game, as the teams shook hands, many of the Ascension players took an extra moment to congratulate Jack and tell him "Nice Shot."

The sportsmanship shown by coach Matt Schwarz and his team was remarkable.  The parents of the St. Clement's team have been pulling for Jack all these years, and after the game, they came up to coach Sullivan with tears in their eyes saying what a great moment it was.  Coach Sullivan, his team, the Ascension team and everyone in the gym that night will not forget that moment, but most importantly, Jack will never forget it either.

Championship Sportsmanship

During the South County Boys 5th Grade District Championship basketball game several league coordinators and district officials spotted multiple Random Acts of Sportsmanship displayed by Jacob Hartman.  As Jacob and his Assumption basketball team battled for the chance to move on to the Archdiocesan Playoffs, Jacob kept the game in perspective.  He played hard and did not let the chances to be a good sport slip by.  Here is how the district officials described Jacob's sportsmanship:

- Midway through the 2nd period of a close game, a reserve player for the opponents turned the ball over by dribbling the ball off of his knee.  The opponent was very distraught and upset with himself.  Jacob walked over to him, put his hand on the opponents shoulder and said some kind words to his opponent.  Everyone in the stands could tell his words comforted an upset player trying to do their best.

- Later in the game, an opposing player took a nasty spill, and out of no where came Jacob to help him up and make sure he was not hurt.  The two players smiled at each other and the opponent thanked Jacob for the hand.

The game eventually went to overtime, and Jacob's team lost.  However, the talk in the bleachers was as much about the sportsmanship Jacob displayed as it was about the great overtime game.  It is awesome to know that we can have good, hard fought games and still respect each other by practicing good sportsmanship. We wish every CYC game was like that.

Studio Altius, the Official Photographer of the CYC, has joined with the CYC to be part of the Random Act of Sportsmanship program in 2010.  Studio Altius will take a photo of Jacob, which we will add to this story.  We thank David Cervan and Studio Altius for putting the emphasis on SPORTSmanship in Sports, and we congratulate and thank Jacob Hartman for putting sportsmanship into action.

Archdiocesan Basketball Playoffs are starting, and all the CYC Spring Sports beginning soon, so we invite you to report outstanding Random Acts of Sportsmanship when you see them, whether it is a player, coach, referee or fan.  Do your part to encourage Sportsmanship at all CYC sporting events.  All you have to do is send and e-mail to buzzswanston@archstl.org and describe the Act.  We will take it from there.  Thank you
