The History of the Friday August 14, 1981 was opening night for the first of the CYC’s annual “Priest Plays”. With an enthusiastic audience and a very talented cast and crew, an experiment in entertainment began. With this production of Kauffmann and Hart’s “The Man Who Came To Dinner”, a tradition started. That opening was the same as hundreds of other community theatre openings that year, except for one little twist. Many of male role were played by priests, Roman Catholic priests of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. These men that stepped forward to help the Catholic Youth Council to raise a dollar or two to fund youth programs across the St. Louis area. Complemented by extremely talented and devoted lay people, this initial production received great reviews and a truckload of laughs. Since that first night, we have presented nearly 30 stage productions. We have moved from our original home at the Kirkwood Community Center to the terrific facilities at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre. We have added musicals and reviews to our list of credits. We even gave ourselves a name; since 1988 we have been known as the “Fr. William Scheid Players. Father Scheid was one of our original cast members and brought very special gifts to all our shows until his passing in July of 1988. Each of our performances is dedicated to his memory and each evening he is a very real part of our cast and crew urging us to get one more laugh. After 28 productions, our cast and crew and staff are too numerous to mention individually. However, all of us at the Catholic Youth Apostolate would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of the priests and lay people who have contributed their time and talents to these yearly presentations. Whether you have played a role in one of our shows, worked backstage or in the booth providing lights, sound or special effects, sold a ticket, donated a prop, gave us an idea, stepped in at the last minute, passed out programs, taken pictures, unloaded a truck full of scenery, helped us put on make–up or done any of the 1001 things that it takes to get the show on stage, please accept our most sincere thanks. Your combined efforts have provided laughter, music and good times to tens of thousands of kind folks who have come out to see our shows.
See you on opening
night!
