Passing of District Chair

It is with a heavy heart that we pass on the news of the death of one of our District Chairpersons.

South County’s, Bob Casey, who had served as the district chairperson since 2004, passed away early Tuesday morning. Prior to serving as the chair, Bob filled many other positions within the district and
his parish, St. Catherine Laboure.
Bob, was a strong supporter of making the program fun and fair for all, while also following the guidelines and rules. He was an excellent example of leadership, fair play and sportsmanship. He will be greatly missed by all within the CYC. Our prayers are with his family.

CYC Sports Team back at full strength

We are excited to announce that Edie Rice has joined our team, filling our administrative assistant position which has been vacant since January. Edie’s first day with us was Monday, May 13. She comes to us from St. Margaret of Scotland, where she has been the administrative assistant/secretary since 2010. With working in one of our parishes, she is aware of the happenings in parishes and in our program. She also has coached, played and had two children participate in the CYC program. We feel she will be a strong addition to our line-up.

Good-bye

With the ending of the 2013 Basketball season, there also comes an ending to one of our CYC Sport Districts. Due to a decreasing number of teams participating in the St. Louis City District and after a year’s time of discussions, it has been decided that the district will cease operations. District leadership along with representatives from the parishes made this decision. Parishes were allowed to select which neighboring district they would like to be moved to. All parish choices were accommodated. The majority of the parishes chose to be placed in the South Central District, with a few moving to the North County District. The actual placement of the parishes can be found on the district pages of our web site.
The CYC Office would like to thank Lori Greiner, District Chairperson, Jerry Beckerle, District Vice-Chairperson, and the Sport Chairpersons along with the parish representatives for all their effort and work on a very tough decision. Thank you to all involved.

Sportsmanship spotted in multiple sports this week

Once again we thank Solomon Alexander and his Sportsmanship Brigade that stopped by two CYC baseball fields and caught two teams deserving of their sportsmanship award.

The brigade went to Barnhart, Mo to watch the 6th grade baseball game between St. Joseph-Imperial and St. Francis of Assisi. It was a soggy field and rain threatened through out the game, bu t that didn't dampen the spirit of the boys. They had fun playing and played with big lieague intensity. Ezra, the St. Joseph 2nd basemen stood out for his leadership and team spirit. He was always encouraging his teammates and his chatter kept his team in the game. Good going Ezra

The brigade also recognized the entire St. Martin of Tours 5th grade boys baseball team this past week-end for outstanding sportsmanship. They showed great respect for their opponents, the umpires and their teammates.

We would also like to acknowledge the Ste. Genevieve DuBois 7th grade girls basketball team and their coaches. Brooke Waller is the only player on their team that does not attend Ste. Genevieve school. Brooke also plays on her school basketball team, Ladue Middle School. Both teams ended up in the same tournament last month. Brooke had to make a tough choice of which team to play for. She wished she could play for both, but she couldn't. She chose her Ladue team. As fate would have it, the two teams met in a later round of the tournament. Carmen Sansone, a Ste. Genevieve teammate went out of her way during warm-ups before the game to wish Brooke good luck and congratulate her on how well she was playing in the tournament. Other Ste. Genevieve players did the same. What a great gesture of sportsmanship which helped Brooke in what could have been a very uncomfortable situation. Those actions speak much louder than any score can.

Finally we would like to recognize Krista Poulsen and her Our Lady Queen of Peace boys lacrosse teams. Krista organized the House Springs group two years ago and coaches both the Crusader and Intermediate teams. Not only is she the only female coach of a CYC boys lacrosse team, but she encourages and enforces good sportsmanship by all her players. The weather has played havoc with the outdoor sports this Spring, and Krista has bent over backwards to accomodate reschedules so all the teams get to play as much lacrosse as possible. Thanks for leading by example Krista! OLQP LAX players your sportsmanship is outstanding.

All these Random Acts of Sportsmanship were spotted by fans. We encourage all fans, along with coaches and players to keep their eyes open and let us know when you see outstanding sportsmanship.
