Sports Can Aid Personal Development, Says Pope

VATICAN CITY, OCT. 7, 2007 (Zenit.org).- When sports are pursued in the right spirit and with respect for dignity they can help promote the development of the person, Benedict XVI said.

The Holy Father explained this on Saturday when he received the Austrian National Alpine Ski Team in audience.

He explained: "Sports can help man to see his own capacities as talents and his life as a gift of God.

"Even when sports are pursued at high levels it is necessary to preserve the interior harmony between body and spirit, not reducing sports to a mere seeking after results."

The Pope invited his guests to be "messengers in the world of this winter sport so loved by the Austrian people."

CATHOLIC ATHLETES FOR CHRIST

"Sport, properly directed, develops character, makes a man courageous, a generous loser, and a gracious victor; it refines the senses, gives intellectual penetration, and steels the will to endurance. It is not merely a physical development then. Sport, rightly understood, is an occupation of the whole man, and while perfecting the body as an instrument of the mind, it also makes the mind itself a more refined instrument for the search and communication of truth and helps man to achieve that end to which all others must be subservient, the service and praise of his Creator."

– Pope Pius XII,
Sport at the Service of the Spirit
July 29, 1945

Just a reminder, all coaches/volunteers must have completed the Archdiocese's Protecting God's Children workshop, which is coordinated by Safe Environment Program, as well as having a Missouri Background check done every 2 years, and have read, signed and returned to your parish the Code of Ethical Conduct, these are Archdiocesan requirements, that the Catholic Youth Council fully supports.  You should contact your parish for details on these requirements and/or copies of the forms.

All Head Coaches/Managers in our program also need to have attended the CYC Coaches Training program, this needs to be completed prior to the start of your season.  All other coaches need to have an official CYC ID Card.
